SMSTO:
A text, already written.
An SMS code opens the messaging app with the recipient and the message body prepared. The sender just presses send — useful whenever you want a consistent, predictable reply.
live example — scannable
Payload format
SMSTO:, not sms:?body=
This is the single most common compatibility mistake in QR generators. The sms:?body= form is an iOS convention that most Android scanners do not parse. SMSTO: is understood on both, so it is what we emit.
SMSTO:+919876543210:Table for two at 8?- SMSTO:
- The scheme. Recognised by Android and iOS scanners alike.
- number
- The recipient, normalised to E.164 from the country you pick.
- :message
- Optional body, after a second colon. Omit it for an empty message.
How to make one
Number, message, done
- 01
Enter the number
Pick the country from the list — we add the code for you.
- 02
Write the message
Keep it short and specific — it is a starting point, not a script.
- 03
Test the whole flow
Scan it and check the message appears before you send.
Where it earns its keep
Where a prepared text helps
- A parking sign, texting a bay number to start a session.
- An opt-in keyword for a mailing list, with the keyword pre-typed.
- A repair request on equipment, quoting the asset number.
- An RSVP where the reply needs to be in a consistent format.
Questions
SMS QR codes, answered
Why not use the sms: format?
sms:?body= is an iOS convention. Most Android scanners do not parse it, so a code built that way silently fails for a large share of users. SMSTO: works on both platforms.
Does scanning send the message automatically?
No, and it should not. The phone opens the messaging app with the fields filled in, and the person chooses to send. No platform allows a QR code to send a message on its own.
Can I include emoji or line breaks?
Emoji encode fine — we force UTF-8, so non-ASCII characters survive intact. Line breaks are inconsistent across messaging apps, so keep the body to a single line.
Will the recipient be charged?
The sender pays for the message at their normal rate. Nothing about the QR code changes the cost of an SMS.
